Firestone Stadium

Firestone Stadium

Akron, OH 44301

During the first half of the 20th century, summertime in Akron meant industrial league baseball. Tire manufacturers Goodyear, Firestone, General and B.F. Goodrich, plus other Akron-based corporations, sponsored teams comprised of their own employees.

Firestone even built its own stadium in 1925, which is still in use today (see photos). The teams usually played one another, but they also took on major league visitors that barnstormed across the country, including the Babe Ruth-led Yankees, who trounced the Firestone Non-Skids in 1921. (Years later, in another exhibition game, Ruth would smash a homer right out of Firestone Stadium!)

Currently, Firestone Stadium, which was refurbished in 1999, is the home of the Akron Racers pro softball team.

More baseball history: from 1935 to 1941, the New York Yankees fielded the Akron Yankees, a Class C farm team based right here in “The Rubber City.”
